Russian Orthodox..Islam is the motivating force behind the autonomous Republic of Ajara--one of four autonomous republics in the Republic of Georgia. Georgia has been fighting wars with the Islamic world for much of its existence--Ajara was created as a buffer zone between Turkey and Georgia. With the fall of the Soviet Union, one of the interesting aspects of this republic is that Christianity is creeping back in... This church is particularly popular because in it was the only structure left standing during a particularly bad earthquake. The locals took this as a sign and the younger generation in particular have been converting from Islam.
