Bald cypress trees grow on small islands in Chesser Prairie in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. <br /> <br /> Okefenokee means "Land of the Trembling Earth" in a Native American language. The term refers to the natural processes as peat bubbles up from the bottom of the swamp, vegetation attaches itself, and plants begin growing to form little islands. The effect of walking on this unstable land as been described as being able to dance with a tree of similar weight. <br /> <br /> Established in 1937, the 396,000 acre Okefenokee is the oldest, well-preserved fresh water marsh in the United States.
