Blazing sunset leaves in shadow the famous gap in Kiger Gorge, atop Oregon's Steens Mountain. Bulldozing down to basalt, Ice Age glaciers carved our huge gorges out of the Great Basin's largest fault block mountain. Beyond, Steens's east face plummets a vertcal mile to the Alvord Desert. The remote high desert region of southeast Oregon is protected under the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act of 2000.
