Oldest Ranger Carl Sharsmith Smokes Pipe

Carl Sharmith, Yosemite National Park's oldest Ranger, lights his pipe in his cabin in Tuolumne Meadows.  Sharsmith's first park service job was as a seasonal ranger-naturalist in 1931.  Besides interpreting for visitors, he did basic research on the alpine meadows of the High Sierra, gathering thousands of herbarium samples and publishing several research papers. His interests included botany, zoology, geology, classical music, Shakespeare, and singing opera.
