Young foals from the Gila herd explore a scratching post tree. The herd was rescued off land in Arizona.   Local ranchers recall the horses hiding in the Salt Cedar in 1904.  They have been tested genetically and are remnants of the horses from the Spanish conquistadors.<br />

Karen Sussman is the third president, . Wild Horse Annie, Velma Johnston, was the first. Annie, along with Helen Reilly worked together for the passage of the 1971 Wild Horses and Burros Act to protect horses from slaughter and inhumane treatment.
