Valparaiso resembles a medieval European harbor more than a 20th century commercial port.  Narrow streets wind throughout the hills with footpaths that resemble staircases.  Ascensores (funicular railways) also transport people up and down the hills.  Once a lively, wealthy seaport, Valpo was hurt when the Panama Canal opened.  It never recovered.  It's opulent mansions and colonial buildings now run down were once a sign of the wealth..
