Canoers paddles through Chesser Prairie thick with water lilies and small islands in the Okefenokee Swamp. Established as a wilderness in 1937, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge protects the waters and wildlife of the 438,000-acre swamp.<br />

Okefenokee means "Land of the Trembling Earth" in a Native American language. The term refers to the natural processes as peat bubbles up from the bottom of the swamp, vegetation <br />
attaches itself, and plants begin growing to form little islands. The effect of walking on this unstable land as been described as being able to dance with a tree of similar weight.
