Herd at Water Hole

Back to Search Results

The Gila herd was rescued off land in Arizona. Local ranchers recall the horses hiding in the Salt Cedar in 1904. They have been tested genetically and are remnants of the horses from the Spanish conquistadors.<br />
The original 31 horses were gathered in 1999 by the BLM and taken in by Karen Sussman with International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros. They are bay colored with a dark mane and shorter broom tail. Their other distinctive markings are small stripes on the lower legs and a dark dorsal stripe.
