Trapped Nile Monitor Lizard

Back to Search Results

Residents gaze in wonder at a 4.5-foot (1.4-meter) Nile monitor lizard captured near their home. Imported from Africa as pets, thereptile can grow to more than
seven feet (2.1 meters) long--way too big and feisty for the average owner to handle.
"They're horrible pets," says Todd Campbell, the University of Tampa ecology professor who trapped this lizard. "They have a high propensity toward being aggressive and untameable."
As a result many are released into the wild, where they breed and prey on native birds, small terrestrial mammals, and other reptiles.
