A mare nuzzles her foal as the rest of the Gila herd grazes in the field.  Mustangs are protected by law since 1971 when Wil Horse Annie lobbied congress.<br />
Gila herd with the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros. Three herds are  cared for at the oldest wild horse organization founded in 1960.  Karen Sussman is the third president, . Wild Horse Annie, Velma Johnston, was the first. Annie, along with Helen Reilly worked together for the passage of the 1971 Wild Horses and Burros Act to protect horses from slaughter and inhumane treatment.
