The Gilman family, founders of Gilman Paper Co. in Georgia, bought White Oak Plantation in the late 1930s. Howard Gilman died in 1998, leaving a foundation to run the White Oak Conservation Center. A patron of the arts, Gilman's collection of paintings was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The facility in north Florida has served as a dance rehearsal studio for Mikhail Baryshnikov.
