Canoe Aerial in Swamp

Established in 1937, the Wildlife Refuge protects the waters, wilderness and wildlife of the 438,000-acre Okefenokee Swamp. <br />

Okefenokee means "Land of the Trembling Earth" in a Native American language. The term refers to the natural processes as peat bubbles up from the bottom of the swamp, vegetation attaches itself, and plants begin growing to form little islands. The effect of walking on this unstable land as been described as being able to dance with a tree of similar weight.
