El Nino Victims

El Nino victims build houses out of cane or cana brava, optimistically calling their new home Mino de Oro or Gold Mine "because of the possibilities." Many of the 2,000 displaced families stay with relatives while a nonprofit organization helps them relocate. In this barren land they are miles from water, but it is promised. <br />
Families work in the hot sun, as afternoon winds blow the flimsy shelters that will be their new homes. Relocating after their homes were destroyed by El Nino rains, the women cook and help the men build while the children play.
