Day of the Dead vigil at a family grave with candles and flowers. Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is Mexico's most characteristic fiesta where it is believed that souls of the dead return to the earth. Families build alters in their homes and visit the cemeteries to commune with their dead loved ones taking flowers and their favorite foods. An atmosphere of celebration in this small community outside Oaxaca, is complete with music. Families spend the night in the cemetery lighting candles, burning incense, talking, eating, and.singing. Some grave sites such as this one had three dimensional sand paintings done just for the celebration.
