Woman Sits Graveside Day of the Dead

Candles light a woman keeping vigil by a grave as Day of the Dead celebrations begin in this town outside of Oaxaca city. Dia de los Muertos is Mexico's most characteristic fiesta when the souls of the dead return to the earth and families build alters in their homes and visit the cemeteries. They commune with their loved ones by taking gifts of flowers and the favorite foods of the deceased. A happy atmosphere of celebration complete with music and families spending the night in the cemetery lighting candles, burning incense and staying through the night.
