Giant Hand Sculpture in Desert

Fingers of a giant sculpted hand reach out of the relentless Atacama sands along the Pan American highway. The Mano de Desierto is a large-scale sculpture of a hand. The art was funded by a local booster organization called Corporación Pro Antofagasta and inaugurated on March 28, 1992.<br />
Constructed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal, it has a base of iron and cement, and stands 11 meters tall. Besides sculptures and art, the desolate region south of Antofagasta, has geologic wonders of geysers and hot springs, volcanoes and saline lakes where flamingos breed.
