Lone FIgure Overlooks the Lost Coast

A woman looks out over Black Sand Beach, part of California's Lost Coast which includes King Range. The oldest conversation area, King Range faces one of the newest componenets of BLM's Clinton-era conservation initiatives, the offshore California Coastal National Monument. King Range and the Lost Coast is an unusual piece of land for BLM. It is a remote 65.000 acres surrounded by private land where most BLM land surrounds private land. The land was homesteaded, and all that was left was undesirable being too steep and too rocky to live on. There are 35 miles of rocky coastline stretching from the Mattole River to the Sinkyone Wilderness Area.
