Aerial Small Town with Fair

The character of fairs in the eastern part of the United States is laden with history. During the Tunbridge Fair in Vermont, traffic packs the streets in the town's historic district. In 1811, America's first county fair was organized in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, by a farmer named Elkanah Watson. Although less than 3 percent of Americans are directly engaged in farming today, county fairs enable communities to appreciate their agricultural heritage.
