Alps Scary Green Moss Men

The Wild Ones don grotesque masks and suits of lichen gathered from the trees for an ancient Pagan tradition known as Schleicherlaufen held in the Tyrol of Austria since 1571. The father and son's costumes are a symbol of winter which parallel's traditional celebration of Carnival.<br />

One of the Wild Ones, Kurt Hofer, is helped into his costume made of lichen that he'll wear in the parade. His wife, Helga Hofer painstakingly spent three weeks making his costume by sewing each piece of lichen onto a cloth. She has done this for Kurt and their son for ten years.
