Timber Cutter Working In Forest

Cody Thomas, timber faller, works alone in the woods at Winter Harbor on Prince of Wales Island. Dangerous work, fallers listen for other saws between cuts to make sure no one is hurt. Cody wanted to be a timber faller since he was a kid, and following his father's lead. He got his first chain saw when he was 9 and he has been working since he turned 17. <br />

It is tiring work. He leaves home at 5 am, drives an hour to the site to work. He carries a heavy chain saw, walking with the grace of a ballet dancer on a maze of fallen trees. His shoes are called corks--they have metal spikes in the bottom to walk on the trees without slipping, and they can cost $750. Cody has a solid reputation as a timber faller and has supported him and a family for 13 years.
