The Alps Glacier Blanket
The Alpine glaciers -- in Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy -- are losing one percent of their mass every year and, even supposing no acceleration in that rate, will have all but disappeared by the end of the century.
Ski resorts have come up with an idea to cover their ice with a fleece-like blankets to slow the melting. Although futile in the long run, the industry may be helped short term by this labor intensive move.
