Frederick Law Olmsted's Passion for Parks, March, 2005 National Geographic Magazine

Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) was the founder of American landscape architecture and park designer who created the much-loved refuges in our cities. Best known for his work in Central Park, his legacy includes Biltmore, the Vanderbuilt mansion as well as parks in Boston, Louisville, Buffalo, Chicaogo, Montreal and Rochester. He was inspired by Yosemite which molded his belief that people needed wilderness to escape stresses of urban life.
