Goats Pack Supplies for Hikers

« Back to Public Land - The BLM-The Big Open, August 2001 National Geographic Magazine

Light-stepping pack goats, favored for their low impact on fragile environments, trail with an outfitter across the Honeycomb Buttes in southwestern Wyoming's Red Desert. Despite its shirfting dunes, wildlife, and undeveloped high desert, this region never won federal protection although it is considered to be one of 15 most endangered wild lands according to the Wilderness Society. Nearby oil and gas development threatens the 600,000 acre national treasure. The high-desert landscape is range for 50,000 pronghorn antelope and a rare desert elk herd.
