Bull Jumping outside of Dimeca. Hamar tribe Bull Jumping Ceremony. The kid in many of the photographs is Gaito Loka and and he was the bull jumper I photographed a week ago... his coming of age ceremony for the Hamar and Bene tribes. Now Gaito is a Maze he participates in the whipping of the women and the managing of the ceremony. Mazes are single men and they are paid for running this ceremony. The bull jumping family in this case wanted to give them one goat and a small jug of honey....

The kid in many of the photographs is Gaito Loka and and he was the bull jumper I photographed a week ago... his coming of age ceremony for the Hamar and Bene tribes. Now Gaito is a Maze he participates in the whipping of the women and the managing of the ceremony. Mazes are single men and they are paid for running this ceremony. The bull jumping family in this case wanted to give them one goat and a small jug of honey. They held out for three goats and a large jug of honey. When they marry they will get a dowry and maybe land but for now they have to survive on payments for bull jumping ceremonies. Maze will only eat milk, honey and meat. Once they marry their diet can change. There were some Benne Maze that wanted to participate, but they ate bananas and so they were excluded... Hamar did not want Benne in the ceremony... but the elders called the Maze aside to discuss it... this was the first time in Gaito's life that he was a participant in decision making in his village... in his tribe...Woman that are related to the boy get whipped in support of him. The idea is that at some point if they need help they can go to him and say "look...
